Boulevard has become the bona fide hometown beer of Kansas City, but in recent years has become one of the largest craft breweries in the central states. In fact, Boulevard's Unfiltered Wheat Beer is the #1 best-selling craft beer in the Midwest.

Boulevard strives to produce fresh, flavorful beers made with the finest ingredients and brewing methods—both old and new. Their passion for their craft is evident in everything they do—from constantly creating and introducing new varieties of beer to the construction of their energy-efficient brewhouse and their partnership with recycling program Ripple Glass.

Boulevard firmly believes that beer is meant to be a memorable experience, not a mass-produced consumer good. beer helps us create memories that leave their mark on us, and boulevard hopes to be a part of that—becoming, as a brand, something that leaves its mark on you and helps you leave your mark on the world.

Back in my high school days, I played club volleyball, and a common opponent was the North Stars. I considered re-branding a volleyball club that I had played for, but I liked the idea of rebuilding something from an outsider’s perspective. I didn’t want to have a positive “pre-bias” towards what I was re-branding. Being familiar with the game of volleyball and being accustomed to North Stars through opponency, to me, was the perfect base of knowledge for a successful redesign.

I also wanted to work with a group that (although perhaps wasn’t successful when it came to graphics), really had their act together when it came to their main purpose of existence. Through records and observation, it’s clear that North Stars stands firm on its skills, character, and  determination.

By rebranding North Stars, I enabled what visually represents them to be on the same level of how they are "physically" recognized.

I have created a framework for a surf supply company located in the heart of the kansas city. Although there is no ocean front, the fundamental values of surfing remain captivating to a young audience. Primarily intended for liberal males between the ages of 15-45. Land Locked will offer products, exclusive to the area, created by wave minded individuals and companies; as well as produce a limited supply of soft goods, such as shirts, socks, hats, etc. The store has decided to debut in kansas city’s crossroads district because of its contrast to more consumer oriented areas like the plaza or overland park mall. Remain Genuine. — Creating a formally refined system with this much breadth was a refreshing challenge. A reworking of the system took place multiple times throughout the length of the project...As one thing was added or changed it skewed the entire system. Mastery of this symbiotic relationship Is far away...I do feel as if I was able to begin to develop an understanding of the organic qualities of the branding process...

Take Five is a food truck dedicated to bringing joy through food, a concept not unknown in the food world, but sometimes overlooked. This  food truck is about sandwiches and bringing them them to the masses. It's a food truck that empowers people to take a break by using a playful approach invoking good old nostalgic memories of being outside and worry free. It's a food truck that cares about taking those 5 minutes to grab a bite, maybe meet someone new. Or play a game on the TV set up on the truck. Take five brings that moment to the people who desire a bit of inspiration or perhaps just a break. So take five.

I have generated a hypothetical meat market located in Kansas City. It is a place where young professions can find community and relationship through their common love for quality meat. These individuals are inspired by the process of meat through the gather stages to the consumption stage. Raghorn not only offers meat, but an experience. Raghorn does not stop after you leave the establishment. The goals and values of Raghorn carry past the point of purchase and into the home. While I still plan to develop this system past this course, I have learned a great deal about the rules and presentation of design systems. I now understand how to view other systems and value the importance of a brands mission of values. Through all things, this should be evident through the design.

As a bass guitar player the one thing that you try to achieve is to stay in the pocket. The pocket is that magical wonderful realm where everything syncs up the rhythm is solid and everyone can feel it in their chests and their souls. For the role of the musician, this means everything coming together for a tight performance. For the individual achieving this pocket can be a very specific experience. Forty Woods Phase 4 Throughout developing the new brand identity, I kept coming back to this weird headspace where I was driving a beat up pickup. It’s hot outside and I’ve got the windows down trying to dry the sweat from my shirt. “Eastbound and Down” by Jerry Reed is on the radio, and I’m pulling in to a gas station in the middle of a long stretch of open highway. Yellow color filter on the film. Inside, there’s a line of Twinkies followed by a rack of girlie-mags in cellophane wrappers. There’s a rotisserie-style rack of beef hotdogs that isn’t turning, and a nacho cheese pump with a dried blob hanging off the end. I buy a Nesquik chocolate milk and drive off… I’m not sure what all that means, but here’s my book.

CUPPA is a hypothetical tea house. Located in Kansas City, MO it is a no frills tea house but a place of comfort and sophistication. Patrons can enjoy sitting down and remember what it's like to appreciate the company of others and be involved in a conversation with friends and family. The experience of drinking fine tea at CUPPA is a leisurely experience.

Using the colors black, white, and gold give the impression that
CUPPA is a sophisticated place, but the gold hints at the traditionalism that one will experience. The clean and simple typography for the brandmark is straight and to the point. By centering it in the middle of the circle it demonstrates the bold attention that CUPPA has. It insinuates the experience a patron will have at the tea house.

The simplicity and use of white space throughout the touch points illustrates the fresh and clean environment, but by adding the fields of black it gives a moment of contrast as well as representing a concept that CUPPA is a place where a person can sit, stay, and take their time. The design represents the traditionalism with the moments of contrast defining CUPPA's contemporary take on the traditional experience of drinking tea.

modern agriculture and corporate industry's involvement with food in the western world have generated many issues. in recent history, we moved from eating seasonal locally sourced foods, to processing, packaging, and transporting them globally. the adoption of industrial models of mass-production applied our food left us with profit-centered thinking—tied with convenience—and  lacking any concern for nutritional content. these foods actually take away from health rather than give to it. what matters now to "big food" is shelf-life and generating it cheaply. when this model is applied to conventional agriculture as well, it leaves us with year-round unseasonal produce which has been transported by fossil fuels, chemically boosted with man-made corporately funded fertilizers, and are nutritionally deficient organisms. even worse, is this produce is consumed out of season, leading to thinking that just because it is fruit that it is healthy, creating an overindulgence in fructose that our bodies were not originally rigged for because those fruits were only available for consumption for a few weeks or months out of the year.

what every single community needs are farms that practice traditionally organic methods that leave the earth and our bodies intact. what they also need is a way to utilize those resources and have an easily accessible way to consume them.

seasonal squeeze offers a return to a model of community supported agriculture and bio-regional consumption. this a juice bar utilizes seasonal and local organic produce sourced directly from the surrounding community as opposed to a bottled up imposter sourced from different parts of the world. this juice is only from kansas city, and only from in-season produce—meaning we're closed half of the year. our juice bar has an element of diy, with the offering of a self-customized experience by choosing produce and pressing it personally. there are a large variety of energy giving flavorful combinations. seasonal squeeze! organic, local, self-pressed kansas city juice bar.

[focus] context: looping animation in store logobuild: two leaves rise, logo fills up like a glass of juice. the color of the juice shifts from green to orange, as a drop orbits the carrot-shape to allude to the sun and earth. concentric stirring of the juice further communicates seasonal cycles. the brandmark is stirred away to reveal the daily special. the daily special is stirred away, and the animation is looped. the audio is leaves and wind that when looped reinforces seasonal cycles.

you oughtta go ahead and floor it to that oddball corner of 43rd, westport, and southwest trafficway. put some food in your belly, some drink in your head, and some kick in your heels.

phase3 For phase three of my project, I really wanted to focus on the attributes and what Lake Lotawana means to the community. I wanted people to see the fun yet the seriousness of the lake. Lake Lotawana provides a fun yet community based environment for the whole family. I juxtaposed full bleed images of the lake with spacious layouts. The images selected all show the lake and the fun people can have there. With my interstitial, I wanted to show the calm and fast paced life on the lake.

Bass

My goal for this round was to establish a style direction for a "bass player's bass company". The objective for this brand, is to embody the bass sound, the bass player, and the long to not so long traditions of bass design. My key attributes are classic, solid, and personal. Ultimately my third direction is the one that I wish to move forward with. With it's sturdy type and heavily based brand marks, I believe it embodies the attribute of solid and classic in a way that those two attributes have historically shown up as staples for reliable bass equipment. What I believe it has over the others is a personal side, with different marks standing in for different types of bass players. Moving forward I may need to synthesize the energy and performing character of the first direction to allow for the attribute of personal to still apply to the more expressive bass player.

Sector 3

For Sector3's Phase three, I wanted to make sure that both the solid quality and the personal quality are brought out in the brand through the use of the heavy weighted brandmark and logo, and the frequent use of photo imagery. The imagery should never be far from any aspect of the touch points that speak to the bass player. There will also be those touch points that the bass player can apply to his or her person or surrounding. For instance, the roadie will have vinyl stickers that can be applied to equipment and cases, as well as a t-shirt. On the Business side of things, we have small square business cards that could be located in music stores that S3 reps can hand out according to their own judgement of the bass players personality. Each of the other touch points should follow this direction of personalized customer relation pieces. The story that this kit of parts should tell is, "As a bass player, when was the last time that a company took time to help you find your bass playing zone, on a personal level?"

Land Locked Surf Supply Co. provides a retail space, as well as an art gallery and music venue for the Kansas City area. Reverberating the cultural values from the 50s and 60s on Wiamea Bay. Hamilton's Barbershop Co. With the touch points I was really focused on creating cohesion through the black and white and letting the red be a subtly accented colour. The environment. The lifestyle. For me These are things that are hard to embody solely through typography and color. What does the brand look like in a time based medium? That is what I am asking myself. I feel as though I can capture the qualitative aspects of the Hamilton's (sophistication, confidence, unreserved) through such an exploration I hope that this video will not only be an asset to my brand, but will also define the demographic that I've had trouble articulating and give life to the experiential part of my barbershop.

Forty Woods Touchpoints my rebrand of forty woods has morphed into some sort of passive aggressive statement on imposing overly designed aesthetics on a business. maybe i'm cranky…maybe i just want to be true to a business that has spent the past 40 years stubbornly removing themselves from trend and modernity. these touchpoints (jargon) reflect an attitude of do-it-yourself functionality and testosterone-fueled sleaze.

[mmarston] phase 3

I was excited for this phase. It was however, one of the most difficult. Creating fluidity throughout the system is a challenge. This phase the design elements such as the logo that I thought I had set in stone, once applied to different platforms needed to be changed. I really wanted to use black, white, and gold. But using gold in the right places rather then relying on it, I learned that it was better to have it as more of a detail moment. I think that my design and the products I created for CUPPA encompass my attributes which are sophistication, leisure, comfort, tradition, and refreshment.

CUPPA phase 3

Raghorn generates and evokes a narrative through its system, allowing the design to convey its sophistication, local, personal, and credible qualities. The design of Raghorn communicates and conveys the experience that it wishes its audience/patrons to gain from the interaction with each of its touch points. Raghorn is primarily black and white in order to convey sophistication while allowing the color to come through the photography and meat itself. Raghorn is not only about the establishment, but the experience you have while at Raghorn and shopping for your meat. It is also targeted towards individuals who love to cook and the process that includes. The design is experienced beyond the point-of-purchase and lives outside of the meat markets context. I wanted to stress this because Raghorn encompasses not only the purchase of the meat but the entire experience of preparing and consuming.

Solutions is my new title for my rebrand of Google. Solutions provides a diverse selection of products and services for individuals, businesses, and students. By rebranding Google as Solutions I have been able to better describe accurately just what Google does for theses users. The brand mark itself is that of a box unfolding. Opening itself up to new possibilities and and creative solutions. Which lends itself to my new tagline: Outside of the box.

Solutions is: Diverse, Innovative, and Personal

I have also a dynamically branded Solutions mark for employees around the world. This has been accomplished with a system that takes into account each employee or offices name, age, location, and department in which it operates. With that information I can create a mark that is not only distinctly Solutions but unique and reflects the core of what Solutions is as a company.
